Who are we?
We are a varied group of people with a common interest in motorcycles and motorcycle riding.
The majority of us are social riders, a few combine it with business, some of us like touring, some of us prefer track days, but the one thing that unites us is the sheer pleasure we gain from riding our bikes and the ‘buzz’ it gives us.
As motorcyclists we know riding our machines can really get the adrenalin pumping, it can thrill and excite, but unfortunately it can also frighten and kill. Our club, the Hull and East Riding Advanced Motorcyclists (HERAM), is a group within the National Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists (IAM), who aim to dramatically increase your chances of survival by showing you how to safely enjoy the ‘buzz’, without reducing the excitement.
What can we do for you?
Nothing if you think you know it all, and if you do, come and give us a demonstration ride, we might learn something from you.
More and more riders are finding that the Driving Standards Agency Test to gain a motorcycle licence is not sufficient to adequately prepare them for today’s roads. Increasingly it is recommended that riders take further training, or guidance and advice, to equip them with the skills required not only to deal with traffic conditions and hazards, but also with the powerful bikes readily available today.
Even if you’ve been riding for years, it’s probable you’ve had little or no further guidance since passing your test. Why is this? There are many reasons. But possibly the most common are that there is nowhere nearby to go, and that it is too expensive. We at HERAM address these two reasons directly.
- We meet on the third Monday of every month at Kingston Bowling Club, Ash Grove, Hull, HU5 1LU at 7.30pm, whilst you’re welcome to attend on bike, we usually arrive by car as we often stay late.
- Compared with £150 per day being charged by professional trainers, we charge a one-off fee of only £149. This includes:
- One year’s membership to the National IAM.
- Membership to HERAM (Your local IAM Club) renewable April 1st yearly
- Advanced Riding Test fee & all relevant literature
- Guidance and advice in preparation for your Test
** However we do ask that you reimburse your Observer with fuel costs
How do we do this?
We can do this because we are a club run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.
All our guidance and advice is given voluntarily by our Club Observers, these are members of the IAM who receive additional, ongoing training to enable them to develop your skills so that you can pass the IAM Riding Test yourself.
When you pass this test you will be eligible for many IAM membership benefits including reduced insurance premiums. But most importantly you will have attained a level of skill which will enable you to ride quickly and enjoyably, you will be much more aware of potential hazards so the risk of an accident or collision will be greatly reduced.
What should you do now?
You can join HERAM now as an Associate Member. Once you have signed up you will be assigned your own Observer and will be able to benefit from their free guidance and advice immediately.
The length of time required to reach test standard will vary and may depend on prior ability, experience etc. Riders may have differing learning styles and progress at different rates, prior to taking your Advanced Riding Test your riding will be assessed by a Senior Observer to ensure your riding meets the required standard for test, this ensures our Club retains its enviably high pass rate.
Whether you choose to attend our monthly club meetings or not as a club member you will receive a monthly magazine containing information on various motorcycle related topics and our monthly ride-out diary and events list. But remember that from day one you will be part of a group of riders who enjoy their bikes, who ride for enjoyment and want to continue to do so for many years to come.
As well as our monthly evening club meetings at Kingston Bowling Club, we also have regular Observed Runs, which offer the opportunity to have your riding assessed by other qualified Observers. We also run ride-outs on Sundays, these are organised by group members and can vary in distance, pace and venue, entirely at the organiser’s discretion.
When you have passed your own IAM Advanced Riding Test why not put something back into the Club and consider training to be an Observer, which now carrys an accreditation from the IMI, enabling others to share your newly acquired skills.
